via email from John Andrade, 1-22-08 Re. Sacadura Cabral's death, he was the pilot of a Fokker seaplane which had been ordered by the Portuguese Naval Air Arm and disappeared somewhere over the North Sea on its ferry flight from the factory to Lisbon, Portugal. It is believed that Sacadura Cabral's cigar (he was a heavy smoker) ignited the petrol fumes from the engine, which made the aircraft explode in flight. No trace was ever found of either Sacadura Cabral or his mechanic, Corporal José Pinto Correia, although debris from the aircraft were found near Dungeness headland, England. The date of the accident was 15 November 1924. Yours sincerely, John Andrade |
