BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
from Jean-Pierre Lauwers
11/30/02

At the Bruges postcard fair recently, I finally bought a René Cozic postcard, Belgian license n° 23. I had known it to be available for several months, but first had to check my pilots list to be sure he was a Belgian.
The postcard was made by a photographer from Deinze (Belgium) and annotated in old handwriting René Cozic/ 21 September 1910!
But apart of this real old photo postcard, I haven't found any biography for him! Again, a very rare postcard to find!
All I know is that he is noted to have died in the Jules de Laminne list (released 1938!) and he must have suffered a natural death, that is, he was not killed in a crash nor was he a victim of service in WWI.

In the picture above, René is seen sitting in his Voisin Racer. It is missing the bowtop high rudders! I guess this was to minimize lift, so it wouldn't fly. It was surely a flight-school plane which was used for ground rolling as a part of flight education..When the hight rudders were replaced, the plane could fly. Admittedly a minor detail, but September 1910 was about a month and a half before he got his license!

The event was featured in excited tones of the Swedish weekly "Veckojournalen" which on 21 May 1911 had the following article. To read the article, click on the title above.
