BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
By email from Roy Nagl, 12-13-03
I was just looking around the Internet for information on the early Russian aviator PyotrNikolaevich
Nesterov, of the Imperial Russian Air Service, who was the first pilot to loop-the-loop, which he did in a Nieuport Type IV, on
August 27, 1913, and thought he might be a candidate for your web site. He was killed on September 8, 1914, after he had rammed,
with his unarmed Morane monoplane, the airplane of Austrian pilot Baron von Rosenthal, who had bombed his airfield, at Sholkiv.
I don't remember, if I had suggested him to you, before, but I just read, in one book, that he was
promptly arrested for endangering his airplane, after he landed.
A valuable link is:
Pyotr Nikolaevich Nesterov
This link leads to a really remarkable page which offers a multitude of additional links. It appears
to have been derived from the book, "History of aircraft construction in the USSR" by V.B.Shavrov, Vol.1 p.117-120. You will be well
rewarded by following as many of the links as time permits. You can access the page by clicking on the title above. |
