1885-1972 AKA Cecil Howard Pixton, Charles Howard Pixton & Howard Pixton |
C Howard Pixton from Russell Naughton's "the PIONEERS" |
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
HOWARD PIXTONvia email from Pete Jones, 8-12-08 I recently ran across some info concerning Charles Howard Pixton aka Howard Pixton winner of the Jacques Schneider trophy in 1914. It approximates his date of birth. Dr. Naughton has an entry on him on his site but not his date of birth so if you decide to open a page on Pixton you'll have his dob (1885-1972) and maybe Russell Naughton can use this too. The below website states that Pixton was 60 years old in 1945 when WW2 ended so 1885 would be right on the mark and he would've been 29 when he won the Snyder trophy in 1914: |

The Daily Mail £10,000 Prize 22 July - 7 August 1911 On this page you find a fascinating story of the race, illustrated with many photographs and including some important links. It presents list of the 30 entrants into the race, along with their aeroplanes and country of origin. Two of them are also found on my website Jules Védrines (9) André Beaumont (1) Gustav Hamel (24) James Valentine (14) H.J.D.Astley (2) E.Audemars (13) S.F.Cody (20) G.Blanchet (11) C.Howard Pixton (19) C.Compton-Paterson (7) Olivier de Montalent (23) C.P.Pizey (17) C.T.Weymann (28) Lt.Reynolds, R.E. ONLINE RESOURCES SUPPLEMENTARY - 1 from Pete Jones, 8-18-08 HOWARD PIXTON I found some nice character shots of Howard. Below he's sitting at the controls of what looks like a 1911 Avro 500 and I've included a rendering of this aircraft. If you've seen the 1965 movie "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines", they had a Avro triplane replica which was similar to the Avro 500: JAMD Photo The Bristol |
ONLINE RESOURCES SUPPLEMENTARY - 2 from Pete Jones, 10-9-08 HOWARD PIXTON I see you added a recent update on Howard Pixton. I found out he has a daughter named Stella Pixton who lives in Jurby on the Isle of Man where her father is buried. She runs a used book store over there and is something of a celebrity. She appeared in the movie "Waking Ned Devine"(1998), unfortunately the last movie of the great character actor Ian Bannen. Here are some websites just to give a flavor of Stella: Jurby, Isle of Man www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurby Website mentions Stella as Howard's daughter www.gov.im/airport/virtual/history/1902/pixton.xml A grainy pic of Stella in her Jurby Junk store(she looks like she's trying to sell the store) www.manxhouses.com/property/jurby_junk/property_blank.htm Screencaps from the movie "Waking Ned Devine"(minus Stella unfortunately) www.moviescreenshots.blogspot.com/2006/09/waking-ned-1998.html Editor's Note: I thank Pete for these additional links. They do indeed add another dimension to his story and are interesting in themselves. |
