From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. "The Challenge 1932 was the third International Tourist Plane Contest (French: Challenge International de Tourisme), that took place between 12 and August 28, 1932 in Berlin, Germany. Four Challenges, from 1929 to 1934, were major aviation events in pre-war Europe." Winifred Spooner entered this race as a member of the Italian team. Courtesy of Giovanni Giorgetti, 12-17-05 "I produce Radio 4's "Making History" and a listener has asked a question about Winifred Spooner. I'm looking for possible speakers who can talk about her."< I responded to say that all I knew about her had been provided by my friend Giovanni Giorgetti, in Italy, whose father had known her. Nick made contact with Giovanni and used his photograph of Winifred to illustrate the story on the BBC Radio 4 website. You can see tha photograph and read the text by clicking on the title. You will notice a link which will enable you to listen to the broadcast. It lasts about ten minutes and I found it to be especially interesting, both with respect to the story of Winifred and also early women aviators in general. You will probably want to listen to it several times in order to digest all of the information. email from Jeff Cooke, 7-4-09 My interest in Winifred Spooner is that I heard a story from my parents, who live in Hinton Parva, that an early aviatrix is buried in Hinton graveyard. I went there yesterday and found the neglected grave of Mr. & Mrs. Spooner who lived at The Grove, Hinton Parva. On the back of the stone is engraved the name of Winifred Evelyn Spooner who died in 1933. My father, who has lived in the village all his life, would have been an early teenager at the time. I have read with interest some of the internet information about Winifred's life and would like to know if she is buried with her parents or if her grave is elsewhere and this inscription is a memorial to her. Regards Jeff Cooke To read the rest of Jeff's message and to view the photos he took of the grave, click on the title. Editor's Note: I thank Jeff for sharing his find with us.
