     If you use the Google search engine on "Silvio Pettirossi", (10-23-03), you will find about 1420 links, most of them related to the airport in Asuncion, hotels, rent-a-car, travel agencies, etc. Luckily, my friend Angel Martini in Buenos Aires alerted me to two important links which treat of his life and career.

     This page on Cosme Alvarez Cabañes' website, La Web del Factor Humano en la Aviación offers a nice little biography of Silvio and a little portrait of him. If you read Spanish, you can access the page by clicking on the title above.
     The website is quite a remarkable resource, especially if you read Spanish. If time permits you should visit it and sample some of its many offerings.
     If you don't read Spanish, I have tried to make a translation into English which you can read below.
 
"SILVIO PETTIROSSI, was born the 16 of June of 1887 in the city of Asunción and moved to the City of Buenos Aires, where he made contact with Jorge Newbery with whom he learned to fly. Awarded a scholarship by the Paraguayan Government was sent to France in 1912, where the International obtained his pilot's license from the International Aeronautical Federation. Once he had it, he made a series of important flights for his time, for example he made an endurance flight of 8 hours, and also was famous for his extraordinary acrobatic flights, as much in Europe as in South America.
     In December of 1914, the Flying club of Paraguay was founded, he being named the president.
     On October 17, 1916, while doing an inverted loop, the left wing of the plane failed, causing him to crash and killing him instantly."

     "In historical annals of Paraguayan aviation the arrival in 1912 of MARCEL PAILLET, French pilot talks about like first great event who in an apparatus "Farman", executed before the asunceno public repeated flights.
     DON EDUARDO SHAERER President of the Republic of Paraguay and other high official civil employees received in such opportunity the baptism of the air. These facts woke up in the town the interest by the avición. Paraguay participated in the universal effort by aviation with the acrobatic flights of one of his more illustrious sons SILVIO PETTIROSSI, whom in 1913 its heading of pilot received in France. From then it made acrobatics in diverse parts of America and Europe, very commented by the press of that time. In 1914 it made for the first time his aerobatics in Asuncio'n. This increased the enthusiasm of the Paraguayan town by aviation and caused that the bases lay down to make specific the creation of the National Aviation school.
     The Aerial Paraguayan Club was founded in 1915 its first president being Silvio Pettirossi. This organization was created to secundar the action of the State and at the same time to stimulate the initiatives deprived in favor of aviation like indispensable element in the life of the nations. This Aerial Club made great contribution to Paraguayan civil aviation.
     Silvio Pettirossi died in 1916 in a plane crash in Buenos Aires and was one of the few Paraguayans who received honors and tributes to their memory as one of the precursors of Latin American civil aviation. Looping the loop in reverse one of his acrobatic creations with which he astonished to the world."
